Here is a simple format to help you make valuable connections and find ways to unleash your expressive, dynamic and passionate tribe-talker within.
1. Ideas = Intention
Identify your intention before you even get to your event.
What are you looking to get out of the event?
Are you there to generate leads?
What kind of people do you want to meet?
Which speakers do you want to connect with?
2. Integrity = Identity
Leave your intrusive elevator pitch at home.
Remember you’re not there to close a sale. Avoid selling yourself and telling everyone why your product or service is the best. Instead, ask everyone you speak to… “Is there anything I can do to help your operation.” This generous approach will leave an impression that ensures they’ll answer your phone call or email after the event.
This display of “Generosity of Spirit” starts to build your relationship for future discussions. Don’t forget to follow up with everyone. Make contact within 72 hours of the event. This keeps your encounter fresh in peoples minds.
3. Passion = Purpose
Don’t sound robotic. Let your true personality shine through. Be authentic.
Building 4 or 5 meaningful connections is better than collecting 30 business cards from people you wont speak to again. Sprouting off your script-like spiel might get you a business card, but probably just to make you go away.
Take time to be fully present in your conversations and remember your follow up time after the event is important. Those “being totally present conversations” can often lead to valuable business opportunities.
4. Leadership = Leverage
Be heard and seen.
Nobody is going to remember you unless you are engaging. If you are at a conference make an effort to ask at least one question during the Q&A session following each presentation. Not an empty question with no real purpose – it needs to be an interaction of authenticity and intelligent. This is a great way to get on the radar of everyone in the room. People will approach you to connect and will initiate conversation. If you seem even a little savvy around a topic, you become attractive, a magnet that can pull in contacts from many directions.
5. Diversity = Dynamic
Team up with a people who compliment your flaws and strengths.
It’s always easier when you have others on your team – it gives you extra confidence and if you select your networking partners carefully you can make sure you are equipped with people who make up for your shortcomings.
For instance, if you are a bit of a risk taker or change agent partner up with someone that is a people pleaser and mentor. Let them open up some conversations and introduce you to bring it home and make new connections. And equally, you can support them when need be, with your unique strengths.
